MARTIN IAIES 11tet

This group began almost as an experiment.
I had written some compositions and arrangements for a larger ensemble, and I thought the best way to test them out—to see what worked and what didn’t—was to put a band together. A couple of years later, this has become the group I dedicate most of my compositional time to.

In a way, it’s an extension of my quartet: the essence of the music shares a similar foundation—strong, characterful melodies, elements of Argentine music, and a high degree of improvisation. But this time, the range of colors is much broader thanks to the orchestration, which includes saxophones, clarinets, trumpets, and trombone.

I’m fortunate to be working not only with some of the most outstanding musicians on the Austrian scene, but also with great composers within the band—something that truly helps shape the group’s identity in a very positive direction.

In 2024, we recorded a series of live videos at the legendary Café Stockwerk in Graz—one of the most iconic venues for modern music in Europe.
Then, in February 2025, we recorded the group’s debut album (my third as a bandleader), featuring the stellar guest appearance of German saxophonist and clarinetist Klaus Gesing, known for his work with Norma Winstone and Anouar Brahem, among others.

The album is currently in post-production and is set to be released in 2026.
